Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian won the 200m individual medley and 50 freestyle on the first day of swimming the US Championships (winter) Friday in Federal Way (Washington).
Phelps won with a time of 1 min 57 sec 61 / 100e, far from his best performance of the year (1: 54.75).
The swimmer with 18 Olympic titles, in full preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, has yet to align 100m butterfly on Friday and the 200 butterfly Saturday.
"I want to focus on my technique, my cast on my turns," he had said before the start of the Championships.
"My goal is to be faster than Minneapolis (last month) and progress throughout the season," he hoped.
Adrian, Olympic champion in the 100 freestyle, won with 21 sec 76 / 100e.
"I feel confident, this championship is an appointment that allows me to position myself for the Olympic selections this summer," he explained.
The prodigy of American swimming and quintuple world champion in 2015, Katie Ledecky, has chosen to overlook this appointment.
Winter Championships of the United States are normally held short course, except the previous year appointments Olympic where they are held in a 50 meter pool.
The Olympic trials will be held from June 26 to July 3 in Omaha (Nebraska).
