The Spanish pugilist Samuel Carmona has qualified for the quarterfinals of the flyweight, in the category of 46-49 kilos, of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, after defeating Monday to points Irishman Patrick Barnes, a double medalist bronze in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
Samuel Carmona, 20 and nicknamed 'The Patriarch', won by mostly stuck on the first of three rounds of a very even fight against Barnes veteran, 29, who reacted and became more incisive in the second but could not break the ward of Rafa Lozano.
His opponent in the quarterfinals next Wednesday (16:15, Spanish peninsular time) will be the Colombian Yurberjen Herney Martinez, 24, who also defeated the points in the same round the Filipino Rogen Ladon. The big canary has secured the Olympic diploma.
