The German driver Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) has achieved pole position after setting the fastest time in a rugged qualifying session of the Hungarian Grand Prix, eleventh round of the World Championship calendar Formula 1 Championship in the Circuit of Hungaroring, while Spanish Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) and Fernando Alonso (McLaren) will sixth and seventh respectively after a shootout in which four red flags were given.
The championship leader will start on the front row with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton -a single point in the championship -, preceding a second row with Red Bull's Australian Daniel Ricciardo and Dutchman Max Verstappen, while German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) will start fifth.
The session was marked by constant stoppages that prevented shooting regularly on the route of Mogyoród. The heavy rain forced a delay in the start twenty minutes after evaluation the danger on the track, flooded by the rain that was falling in large quantities and that hindered the circulation even with extreme wet tires.
At 1420 hours the pilots started rolling, but not for long. With 13 minutes to finish the Q1, a terrible downpour sent cars to garages, a halt to the Fernando Alonso came third and Carlos Sainz sixteenth, with Mercedes in the 20 and 21 positions.
Fifteen minutes later, the session resumed but only for four minutes; the Swede Marcus Ericsson car (Sauber) was going to the grass and crashed into the barriers, without consequences. It took another ten minutes for participants to go out again unto track.
The session, however, was doomed to have no continuity. Felipe Massa (Williams) had on the wall just three minutes later, carrying intermediate tires, and again the red flag waving in the Hungarian track.
A new Indonesian Rio Haryanto accident (Manor) led the umpteenth red flag with just over a minute to go; no time to conclude, British Jolyon Palmer (Renault), Massa, Danish Kevin Magnussen (Renault), Ericsson, Germany's Pascal Wehrlein (Manor) and Haryanto resulted eliminated. In total, more than one hour and a quarter late, with Alonso third.
TRUCE IN Q2
Time then began to give a truce. As the sun rose at the Hungaroring, the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) signed the first reference time with the Mercedes lurking. Against all odds, the Spaniard began to make great lap times, finishing with the fourth fastest time and demonstrating the good performance of his McLaren in changing conditions.
Q3 also passed Sainz, ninth, while the reigning world champion, Hamilton, was tenth and was saved by thousandths of being eliminated. Outside the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen fourteenth stayed.
The triple world champion made no mistake in the final round, in which he set a 1: 20.108 that was unattainable until the arrival of his companion, who with a time of 1: 19,965 took pole. Beside him in the front row will teammate.
Alonso spun on the last lap prevented him from improving positions, and finally depart seventh leading the fourth line. Meanwhile, the Spaniard Sainz start the race from the sixth position.
