World champion and five-time Olympic medalist, one of the greatest hopes of his country to achieve gold in Brazil, confessed that he received this hefty phone bill for using data roaming ( "roaming") after becoming "hooked" to the popular game smartphones, as recorded by Japan's Kyodo.
Uchimura, 27, traveled to Brazil by mid-July with the rest of the Japanese gymnastics team, and would have played the newest installment in the Pokémon franchise since this was released later the same month.
The athlete reported that "could not believe" when he saw the amount of the bill, noting that finally opted for a flat rate of "roaming" of about 3,000 yen a day (26 euros / $ 29) to continue playing "Pokémon Go " in Brazil.
Uchimura last year became the first gymnast in six titles stringing consecutive world champion, by winning the eventing World of Glasgow (UK).
It has also been five times Olympic medalist, with a gold in the individual category at the 2012 Summer Olympics and four silvers (two in London and two in Beijing 2008).
